ANIMAL BREEDS IN PUNJAB PAKISTAN
Introduction
Punjab has a large livestock population, well adapted to local conditions, and some of the best tropical breeds. About two third of the farming community in Pakistan consists of small farmers who are characterised by small land holdings (less than 5 hectares) and by several factors that influence their productive potential and income generating capacity. Livestock farming is an integral part of rural smallholders and has a vast untapped potential for productivity increase and income generation. Livestock holdings by the small farmers constitute a significant portion of the farm incomes. Small farmers and landless livestock producers derive around 10–25 percent of their incomes from this sub-sector. Most farms are fully integrated mixed units with cattle, buffaloes and sometimes sheep or goats or both. Traditionally, cattle were kept as draft animals, with milk as a by-product, and buffaloes as milking animals. With the mechanization of agriculture, however, cross-bred cattle are replacing the poorer breeds. Except for nomadic sheep, goats and camels, peri-urban dairying and commercial poultry, animal production is closely integrated with crop production. Livestock raising is closely integrated with crop production system partly because fodder production is a part of the crop rotation cycle and also because crop by-products and wastes are utilized by the livestock sector. In other words, all ruminant production systems depend heavily on crop residues, fodder grown on the farm and/or rangelands, wastelands and fallow lands.
Buffaloes in Punjab Pakistan belong to river type with characteristic chromosome number of 50 and they are kept mainly in the northern and southern irrigated plains, and cattle are raised throughout the Punjab. Sheep and Goats are raised in all AEZs, but larger herds are common in areas with forage and grazing. There is a single breed of dairy buffalo which is called the Nili–Ravi, and five breeds of cattle: the Sahiwal which is famous as a diary breed, the dual-purpose Cholistani and Dhanni, and the draft breeds, Dhajal, and Rojhan. There is large number of cross-bred cattle found in the Punjab Province. There are five breeds of sheep, Cholistani, Thalli, Kajli, Lohi and Lati. There are many breeds of goats found in Punjab but four breeds are originating from Pakistani Punjab, that are Teddy, Nachi, Dera Din Panahi and Chisti. There are five breeds of camels, Lal Gadd, Thalli, Damani, Barella and Riasathi or Marrecha.

Cholistani
The Cholistani is a multi-purpose breed, being used for both meat and milk and as a draft animal. They are Zebu or Bos indicus cattle and are found in the Cholistan desert in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Cholistani are usually speckled red, brown or black. They are of recent origin and are thought to have been derived from the crossing of Sahiwal with the local cattle. Dajal

The Dajal are a draft type of cattle and are found mainly in the Dajal area in district Dera Ghazi Khan in Punjab Province. Their color is white or gray, deepening to almost black on the neck, shoulder and hump in mature males. The average weight at maturity of Dajal cattle is 500 kg for males and 390 kg for females. The Dajal breed is an off shoot of Bhagnari breed, having almost similar points. However, Dajal cattle are comparatively smaller in size and lighter in color.

Dhanni
The Dhanni is a draft type that is found in Attock, Rawalpindi and Jhelum districts in Punjab Province of Pakistan. The coloring in the majority of Dhanni cattle consists of black or red/brown spots on a white coat. The average weight at maturity is 400 kg for males and 300 kg for females. The Dhanni is of medium size, compact body with comparatively straight back, fine skin, small head, stumpy horns, ears small and alert, compact hump, small dewlap, tight sheath, whip like tail ending in a white switch, and a small udder. It is a sturdy animal having great agility, suitable for light draught work. The following variations in body color of Dhanni animals are generally found:
 predominately white coat with black spots (Chitta Burga)
 predominately black coat with white spots (Kala Burga)
 white mottles with brown and black patches (Nuqra)
 Greater part is red with white spotting on certain parts of the body (Ratta Burga).

Sahiwal

The Sahiwal originated in the dry Punjab region which lies along the Indian-Pakistani border. They were once kept in large herd by professional herdsmen called "Junglies". However with the introduction of irrigation to the region they began to be kept in smaller numbers by the farmers of the region, who used them as draft and dairy animals.
The Sahiwal is one of the best dairy breeds in Pakistan. It is tick-resistant, heat-tolerant and noted for its high resistance to parasites, both internal and external. Cows average 2270 kg of milk during a lactation while suckling a calf and much higher milk yields have been recorded. Due to their heat tolerance and high milk production they have been exported to other Asian countries as well as Africa and the Caribbean. As oxen they are generally docile and lethargic, making them more useful for slow work.
Their color can range from reddish brown through to the more predominant red, with varying amounts of white on the neck, and the underline. In males the color darkens towards the extremities, such as the head, legs and tails.
The Sahiwal is the heaviest milker of all Zebu breeds and display a well developed udder. Sahiwals demonstrate the ability to sire small, fast-growing calves and are noted for their hardiness under unfavorable climatic conditions.

Rojhan
This breed is most commonly found in Rajanpur dictrict of Punjab province of Pakistan and it is famous among baloch tribes of punjab residing in that area. This breed is labelled as a light draft breed. Rojhan cattle are bred in Bakht Baidar Khan and G.B. Isani. These are small animals with a red and white spotted coat (considerable variation in spot size, tight skin, small and alert ears, small pointed horns, short neck, proportionately large hump, and extended dewlap). Their thin tail usually ends in a white switch. They have a small, tucked up udder. Milk yield is very low. The adult male weighs 660-770 lbs and the female 500-600 lbs. Male stock is very suitable for draught work in hilly and sub-hilly areas.
